South Ayrshire
South Ayrshire extends east from the Firth of Clyde into the western Southern Uplands, including part of the area once known as Carrick. This is Burns country – the national poet was born in Alloway, by Ayr, and many of his works are set here – and is also famous for its fine and historic golf courses at Prestwick, Turnberry and Troon. There is an international airport at Prestwick, and Culzean Castle was Scotland's first country park. South Ayrshire's other main settlements include Maybole, Girvan, and Ballantrae. This is a huge rural area, around half of which is moorland and pasture, with a strong agricultural base, but there are also high-tech industries around Ayr and Prestwick.
